DADS!!!

My friend Heather came up for a visit and we spent several hours yesterday making our hubbies some awesome Father's Day gifts.

I had heard about putting your children's footprints on a piece of paper, adding a poem and framing it. But, I thought, "Why not do all of that on burlap instead?" So we did!  Did you know that if you use spray adhesive to attach a piece of burlap to computer paper, you can run it through your printer??? Awesome! That is how we got the poem on. Then, we used black paint to do our kids' footprints.

Here it is:

We also went to Hobby Lobby and had the kids pose with letters that spell Dad and took their picture. Then, we came home, printed them off and put them in a frame. I love that they each show their personality in the pictures. Very sweet. Here it is:

You know how I love to share the realities of DIY. All in all, it went pretty smoothly. However, there were some glitches like: My first few poem prints on the burlap were too light and I had to change my font so I almost ran out of burlap, I forgot to bring my camera to the Hob Lob, so Heather had to use her phone to take the pics (I still think they turned out great!), it was pretty messy to do the foot prints, and Heather and I both had to take our burlap prints in and out of the frame SEVERAL times because of stickers we forgot to remove or random burlap strings that were left by the glass. Here is a pic of us after 11:00 p.m. when we finished!

  2. what kind of spray adhesive did you buy? and you sprayed the burlap onto the paper..just like that?

  3. I used Tree House Studio spray adhesive from Hobby Lobby. It was $6, so you may be able to get some cheaper spray at another store. I sprayed my computer paper lightly with the adhesive and then put my piece of burlap on top. I trimmed the burlap edges to fit the computer paper. Then I put it in the paper tray and ran it through my printer just like regular paper. Make sure to use bold font to get the ink to show up enough. I hope that helps!

  4. Did you just paint the square with the four little squares in the corners by hand? I can't wait to try this for Father's Day!

  5. Those are actually square tacks from the scrapbooking section at Hobby Lobby. The black paper behind the poem is poster board cut to size. Also, thought I should mention that we just stuck the burlap in the frame, centered it, then put the cardboard that comes with the frame behind it to push it in. Then, we trimmed down the sides of the burlap that were left sticking out. We just trimmed them a little. There was still some burlap sticking out that we just pressed the back of the frame over. It took us a few times to get the centering right and make sure no random burlap strings were in front of the glass.

  10. I was wondering if you remembered what font you used? I too am having trouble getting the right font to show up well on my burlap!

  11. Oh dear! I wish I could remember! It may have been the "sharpie" font and of course, bold. I'm sorry I am not more help on that issue!

  12. I want to spell out Daddy since I have 5 kids, what size frame did you use and what size prints? Would you recommend any specific size for my situation? And did the frame you use come like that or did you just use scrapbook paper in the background?

  13. It may have been an 18 x 24 poster frame. I got it at Hobby Lobby. I used a large piece of burlap for the background and had my girls do their footprints at the bottom. Then, I did another piece of burlap that I ran through my printer and used black poster board behind that to define it. For you, I would recommend getting a larger poster frame. If you have a Hobby Lobby nearby, you can always use your 40% off coupon to get a fairly cheap frame. Since you have 5 sets of footprints to do, either that larger frame would work, or you could just do one foot from each child. Let me know if I can help more.

  14. Thank you so much! I'm planning on going there tomorrow to see what I can find! I was thinking about spelling out DADDY, with a pic of each kid holding a letter like you did with DAD, Sorry if I was confusing! I was wondering about what size frame you used for that one? And did you do 5 x 7s of each kid? and did the frame come with the 3 picture openings, or did you just do it your own way with scrapbook paper? Does all that make sense?

  15. Oh, I'm sorry! I was assuming you meant the burlap one. Now your question makes more sense. Ha! I did buy that frame with the 3 openings already in it and they are 4 x 6 openings. I printed the pictures from my computer. I hope you can find what you're looking for at Hobby Lobby. If not, there are some cute 5 opening frames online.

  17. Thank you so much for sharing this. I was wondering if you put the burlap/paper through a laser printer or an ink-jet printer. I'm assuming an ink jet but wanted to confirm. Thanks!

  18. You are welcome! It is an ink-jet printer. Good luck with your project!

  19. I am absolutely in love with this project and really want to do this for my hubby. My question is where did you get the burlap?

  20. Thank you!! I got the burlap at Hobby Lobby. They sell it by the yard. If you don't have a Hobby Lobby, you might call a local fabric store. I hope you find some!

  21. Cute Idea! What kind of paint did you use for the kids footprints?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thank you Terran! I just used black craft paint. It's non-washable, so make sure your kids and, most importantly, you put on old clothes for the project. I'm pretty sure I had more paint on me than my kids did since I was the one dipping their feet in the paint, getting the footprint and cleaning their feet off. : )
